Taejongdae (태종대)

Introduction
Designated as a Busan monument, along with Oryukdo Island, Taejongdae represents Busan, and is especially famous for its rock beach. Featuring its highest peak at 250 meters, there are forests of pine trees and 200 other varieties of trees. Taejongdae was named after the 29th king of the Silla Kingdom (57 BC-AD 935), King Taejong Mu-Yeol (604-661). King Taejong traveled to many places but this was the place he enjoyed shooting arrows the most.

Under the lighthouse of this resort is a rock called Sinseon Rock, named after the myth that gods and goddesses came down here to relax. At this rock is a figure called Mangbuseok, named after the story of a woman who waited for her husband who had been taken to Japan. Taejongdae is also famous for the ritual of praying for rain, performed when there are droughts, and rain on the 10th day of the fifth lunar month is called the “Taejong Rain.” On days with clear skies you can see Japan’s Tsushima Island from the observatory.

On clear days in Taejongdae, you can see Tsushima Island in Japan, about 56 kilometers away.
Taejongdae is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Busan.
This area has been used as a military fortress for a long time since the Japanese occupation, and the access of ordinary citizens was limited. Then, in 1967, the Ministry of Construction and Transportation announced it as an amusement park, and in 1969 it was designated as a sightseeing spot. The Taejongdae ring road has a total length of 4.3km and was opened in 1970 and completed in 3 years. It was designated as Busan Monument No. 28 on June 26, 1972, and in 1974, it started full-scale development in accordance with Taejongdae Amusement Park development plan. On November 1, 2005, it was designated as National Historic Site of Cultural Properties No. 17, and was recognized as National Geological Park on November 27, 2013.
The name Taejongdae is derived from the fact that King Taejongmu has visited this place to shoot his bow. There is also a story that Taejong stayed at Taejongdae to repatriate Japan.
These stories are difficult to verify accurately. However, it can be accepted that Taejongdae was very important locally since ancient times. The history of the name Taejongdae dates back to the Silla Dynasty.
According to the “Dongrae Site” (1740), it is said that the 29th Silla Dynasty King Taejong Muteo came here to shoot his bow and added the name “Taejongdae” to this place.

In addition, Jungbok ‘s “Gongbok Gangmok (東 史 根 目)” is told as follows.
“Now, there is Taejongdae in Jeongyeongdo in Dongrae, and it is said that when Taejong of Silla dictates Tsushima (對 馬 島) Silla is a tiny corner of the land, and it has been able to fight against Goguryeo and Baekje in the land, and punishes the sea in the sea, and the magnificence of its troops I can think of this as a unification of the three kingdoms. The whole land mass of the thaw in the posterity will be the reason why the barbarians have been suffocated, and the rulers will have to consider the defense of the party. ” Thus, Sungbok is raising the idea that Taejong of Silla stayed at Taejongdae when he hit Taejongdo.
There is also a story about the Taejong of Joseon. In the year 1419, when the 3rd Taejong of Chosun Dynasty reigned, there was a big drought. In May of that year, it was reported that it rained because it rained down to Taejongdae. From then on, the rain that falls in early May in the lunar calendar was called “Taejongwu” and when the drought meets, the rain falls here. As mentioned in “Dongrae Land”, when a drought arose in Taejongdae, when Dongrae drought, Dongraebu raised a ginseng at Taejongdae.
The following records about the Yeoyoungdo-jinja Shrine can be seen in the “Nephrology Dongguk-jiji-seung” and “Seomyo-jo”. “I made a stone doll, and in the old days it was said that there was an expectation of rain, but now it is gone.”
The period of compilation of “Shinryeonggokgyoji Seungam” is 25 years in the middle school (1530)
It says Taejongdae in “Dongraebuk-eiji” “high red tide”. “It is located on the eastern side of Yeojyeong-do in the southern 30-dong area of Dongrae Bay. There is a stone bridge to the west, with the seawater circling.
When Silla’s Taejong stayed in Taejongdae when he hit Taejongdo, or when Taejongmuheon was bowed to a packed target, he was called Taejongdae, or when the Joseon Taejong had a big drought in the end of his reign, the rain came down Tells us that Taejongdae was the sanctuary of praying for national well-being.

Taejongdae has not only Yeongdo but also coastal scenery which is representative of Busan. It is a sightseeing spot with many attractions. It is a scenic spot with abundant natural ecological resources such as dense forests with diverse vegetation leading from the hinterland to temperate cliffs, riverside cliffs, fireflies, dinosaur footprints and Boramae habitats. Taejongdae is not only a natural ecological resource like this, but also has a story about the king of Taejongmu of Silla and the Taejong of Joseon.
